The 2nd book by this author and full time musician (at last count he plays in 3 bands.) His first book-You Idiot, was a collection of fanzine articles that was absolutely hilarious. Although Hit… has its funny moments, this is more of a cohesive narrative. It basically tells the story of the author from a pre-teen and being an admitted dork that plays Dungeons & Dragons to a bored high school kid and a bit beyond. That’s when the spirited hi-jinks graduate to vandalism and shoplifting. During this time frame one of the author’s friends seems to be constantly pushing the envelope of what is deemed “acceptable” in Suburbia. Rick Denton’s “screw-you” attitude to authority will have you smiling and shaking your head frequently. But as the crew gets older and away from the high school scene, he seems unable to move on. The author is able to move on and takes a few stabs at why some people just can’t make the jump. When the two former friends make contact again its clear that the relationship is no longer able to function. It’s a great read that will have you thinking back to the days when the mall was your main hangout to escape the house and hanging out with your parents too much. It’s amazing that the author can remember in detail some of these events that probably happened quite a long time ago. We are all able to benefit from this, so do yourself a favor and pick this book up.
