DECEMBER 2005 ISSUE
Rare, obscure and out-of-print holiday albums
Intro:
With the holiday season upon us, let us take time to reflect upon those rare, obscure and out of print holiday Albums that are worth searching for!
"Keith Moon presents A Christmas Carol"
Keith Moon - 1974 Album
A year before his 1975 solo album, Keith Moon delivered a holiday classic in which he narrates (as Scrooge) the classic Dickens' "A Christmas Carol", complete with comedic interludes of song. |
"Hanukkah Swings!"
Brian Wilson - 2005 CD
Prior to his "All I Really Want For Christmas" disc, Brian "tested the waters" with an album of Hanukkah favorites. The disc can only be found in Starbucks cut-out bins. |
"Run Run Rudolph (Before I Bite Your Friggin'Head Off!)"
Ozzy Osbourne - 1993 CD
Ozzy's Christmas album was released to initial good sales, until MTV banned his video for the scene depicting Ozzy biting the head off Rudolph. |
"Singing a Camelot Christmas"
Jack Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe - 1961 Album
This rare Reprise album was taken out of circulation following the death of Marilyn Monroe. It helped fuel the already prominent rumors of a JFK/Monroe affair. |

"Have a Hare, Hare Krishna"
George Harrison - 1974 Album
George's holiday album from 1974 was originally panned for being even more preachy than "Living in the Material World" (if THAT is possible) and was not reprinted after its initial run of 1000 albums. |
"Countdown to Festivity"
Steely Dan - 2005 CD
The Steely Dan Christmas album contains some cool covers of classics meshed with some of their old hits and fan favorites including: "Santa Claus Is Coming to Barrytown", "All I Want for Christmas Are My Gold Teeth", and "Aja Lang Syne".
(Thanks to Chris DeCrocker for letting us use this one!) |
"Wonderful Krishna Time"
George Harrison - 1979 single
George Harrison's 45 rpm single "(Simply Having a) Wonderful Krishna Time” was issued in 1979 on Dark Horse Records, but was soon pulled from the market. Evidently, Harrison was afraid of another "He's So Fine"/"My Sweet Lord" type of lawsuit from Paul McCartney himself. |
"Santa Wants A Brandy"
Keith Moon - 1976 single
Keith Moon second yuletide release was the 45 rpm single "Santa Wants A Brandy”, issued in 1976 on MCA Records. However, like his first Christmas album, it did not sell well and is now a collectible. |
"Christmas Ain't Cheap"
Keith Richards - 1989 Album
Keith Richards gave us a look at the dark side of the holiday in his 1989 landmark solo album. |
"A Christmas Blast For You"
Phil Spector - 2004 CD
Phil Spector's bizarre 2004 Christmas album was an attempt to raise money for the rising cost of his legal defense for his upcoming trial. |
